Parents & Grandparents Sponsorship

Canadian citizens and permanent residents have the opportunity to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada through two main programs: the Family Class Sponsorship and the Super Visa Program.

The Family Class Sponsorship program includes a specific stream for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. If successful, these applicants can receive Canadian Permanent Residency and may become eligible to apply for Canadian Citizenship four years thereafter.

Eligibility Requirements for Family Class Sponsorship

To sponsor parents or grandparents under the Family Class program, the sponsor in Canada must meet the following conditions:

  • Be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Meet the minimum necessary income level required for the program. If married or in a common-law relationship, the combined income of both partners can be considered.
  • Sign a Sponsorship Agreement which commits the sponsor to financially support the sponsored relative, if necessary. This agreement also confirms that the sponsored relative will make efforts to support themselves.
    • Note: Dependent children under 22 years of age are not required to sign the agreement.
    • Quebec Residents: Must sign an “undertaking” with the province of Quebec, which is a separate contract binding the sponsorship.
  • Promise to provide financial support for the sponsored relative for a period of 20 years, starting from the date the relative becomes a permanent resident.

Income Requirements

Sponsors must provide evidence that they meet the income requirements by submitting notices of assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). They must demonstrate that they have met the income threshold for three consecutive years.
